US Route 395 in Washington and Oregon

My 1969 Porsche 912 and I drove through eastern Washington and Oregon on our way from Canada (starting at Laurier WA) to Southern California on Route 395.

The 1955 Sturgis Bridge (southbound) in foreground and modern concrete bridge (northbound) in background cross the Columbia River at Umatilla OR.

Pendleton is home to the world famous Pendleton Woolen Mills. Because of my lifelong fondness for Pendleton products, I wisely locked my wallet and credit cards in the car before I entered the building.

I stopped again about ten minutes later to check my oil (it was OK) and enjoy some Oregon history at the Battle Mountain historic marker.

Earlier in my trip I photographed a cautionary highway sign not seen in the Los Angeles area. I intended to keep it as a rural highway curiosity unknown in the City. But very soon the previously photographed sign took on new meaning to me.

This is a curious highway sign to a city guy like me.

Cruising effortlessly (at legal speed, of course) north of Seneca, Oregon, I first saw what looked like a dark blur on the highway far ahead. I immediately began to slow. The blur soon became a herd of cattle accompanied by real cowboys mounted on horseback. Wow!

Already off the throttle and slowing, I quickly downshifted to third gear. Then light braking and second gear. By that time the cowboys were giving me enthusiastic "Slow down pardner!" gestures - or at least that's what I thought they were.

Outside Spokane one of my almost new tires suffered a fatal injury. I had a good spare and, with the help of my Auto Club membership, we were soon on the road again.

Premature death of a new P195-65 R15 Dunlop Sport Plus

Not wanting to tempt highway fate with no spare so far from home, I stopped at Pasco Tire.

Unfortunately, Dunlop Sport tires are not widely available in southern Washington, so Manager Dan Suarez asked one of his crew to trash my unusable mount another suitable tire for me. I was soon on my way. These are my public thanks to Manager Dan Suarez and Pasco Tire's friendly service to a traveler in need.

Oregon greeted us at the 1955 Umatilla Bridge, now used only for southbound traffic. At the nearby Visitor Center, I learned that traffic before 1955 crossed the Columbia at Umatilla by ferry. I'm sorry I missed that.

The Pendleton Mills retail outlet is part museum and part shopping mall.

Quickly back up to cruising speed south of Pendleton, mountains loomed ahead. The eager 912 almost seemed to anticipate having some safe fun on a near-deserted mountain highway.

The highway, history, scenery and weather combined for a perfect Oregon day.

The highway was spectacular throughout this clear but cold afternoon. Traversing Dale, Meadow Brook, Ritter Butte, Long Creek and Branch Creek summits, we had just driven through Porsche heaven. My 912 and I stopped for the night in John Day. It had been quite a day.

The next morning, after the usual pre-trip inspection and safety checks, my 912 and I said goodbye to John Day (the town, not a person) and headed south.

Earlier in my trip I photographed a cautionary highway sign not seen in the Los Angeles area. I intended to keep it as a rural highway curiosity unknown in the City. But very soon the previously photographed sign took on new meaning to me.

This is a curious highway sign to a city guy like me.

Already off the throttle and slowing, I quickly downshifted to third gear. Then light braking and second gear. By that time the cowboys were giving me enthusiastic "Slow down pardner!" gestures - or at least that's what I thought they were.

I was soon surrounded by the herd. At no more than a very cautious 10 mph in first gear, I couldn't resist documenting this very effective form of Oregon highway speed control.

Eastern Washington and Oregon boast enough scenery, history and excellent roads to satisfy any Porsche enthusiast, with highway cattle drives possible for added interest. I'll spread the word, pardner.

What's Special About The 1969 Porsche 912? - Origins

Plz click Like button to thank the Author:

The Porsche 912 began as the Porsche 901, introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963. Porsche's new Model 901 for 1964 was a sensation to some and viewed with skepticism by others. In addition to a slightly larger and distinctly attractive new body, the 901 featured Porsche's new 6 cylinder, air cooled, race-derived, double overhead cam engine.

In what seems to have been a rare mistake, Porsche gave their new passenger car the 901 model designation. However, a French company had an existing copyright on all European passenger car model designations with a zero in the middle position.

Porsche adjusted quickly and introduced the new 1965 Model 911 the year after the Frankfurt Auto Show. (Porsche could, and did, use the center zero on race car models, including the stunning fiberglass bodied 904, the 907 and 908.)

Early sales of the then-revolutionary 911 were slow. Many Porsche owners who might have been early 911 buyers may have been unsure of the new 6 cylinder engine.

Thousands of owners, though, were very happy with the legendary 4 cylinder pushrod engine that had served them faithfully since the early 1950s.

The Porsche factory had a supply of the Model 356 engines on hand, so it didn't take long for the new 912 to be introduced with the more familiar engine in 1965.

The 1965 "painted dash" and later 912s were well received. The 912 actually outsold the much faster (and more expensive) 911 by about two to one in the 1965 model year.

And for good reason; the Porsche 912 featured a slightly de-tuned version of the well-known Model 356 Super 90 engine and a snappy new design. Beneath the exquisite new Porsche body were the 911's independent 4 wheel torsion bar suspension and race-proven chassis features.

The 912 was roomier than the Model 356. It also had better driver visibility and boasted almost perfect 45/55 front/rear weight distribution. The 912 cost less and weighed less than the 911.

The 912 was easier (and less expensive) to maintain. The 912's economical, durable, and race-proven engine traced its roots back through the successful "giant killer" Porsche Model 356 variants and directly to Dr. Porsche's Volkswagen of the late 1930s.

Porsche reportedly manufactured 31,270 912s during the 1965 to 1969 model years.

In the final 1969 model year, a reported 4,679 912s rolled off Porsche assembly line into the garages of eager buyers all over the world.

Mine is pictured above, in British Columbia after having been driven on U.S. Route 95 without incident from the Mexican border at San Luis, Arizona to Eastport Idaho at the Canadian border. The car has its original 1969 yellow on black California license plates and new (2006) Grand Prix White paint.

It was built as a Light Ivory 4-speed Coupe with tinted windows, front and rear bumper horns and a Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio. It rolled off the Porsche assembly line on May 13, 1969.

For many, including this Writer, the 1969 912 was, and is, the perfect sports car for the common man or woman.

It also happens to be an ideal high performance ride for enjoying America's current and former U.S. highways in classic style.

The front wheels take care of the traction while a 5-speed manual gearbox accesses the power and torque.

Fiat’s test times reveal that the Abarth 695 “Tributo Ferrari” can accelerate from 0 – 100km/h in under 7 seconds and its top speed is set at 225km/h (140mph). The average C02 emissions figure is 155g/km.

Italians are renowned for their style and in this instance lots of work was done to keep it that way. We are talking about 17-inch wheels wrapped in 205/40 ZR17 tyres, Brembo four-piston calipers, four tailpipes, carbon fibre door mirrors and xenon headlights. Of course the paintwork is red, specifically Scuderia Red.

Inside the tribute includes Ferrari-style instrumentation, non-slip aluminium footwells, carbon fibre seats that weigh 10kg (22 lbs) less than standard ones, red leather inserts and the racing pedals which are personalised with the Abarth Scorpion logo.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is a significant update of the automaker’s original four-door coupe and builds on the pioneering role of its predecessor with a fresh new interpretation. Professor Gorden Wagener, head of design at Mercedes-Benz said “The new Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class points the way forward for the future perceptible design idiom of Mercedes-Benz” and At the same time it takes its inspiration from the great tradition of stylish, refined sportiness which has always been a feature of Mercedes coupés.”

We can easily see the automaker’s Bentley-esque rear “hips” that take the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan’s look to a whole new level. A much flashier pair of taillights are easy to see as well. Up front Mercedes-Benz opted for full LED headlamps, the world’s first to offer the full range of turn signals, running lamps, low and high-beam functions purely from LEDs.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class with a new twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter V8, good for 435 horsepower and 513 lb-ft. of torque. Expect an AMG variant sporting the Bi-turbo 5.5-liter V8 to come in the relatively near future – boasting 563 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. of torque.

The interior of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is also distinguished by a timeless design which combines discreet elegance with innovative details and handcrafted perfection. The eye-catching cockpit features a wrap-around dashboard sweeping from the driver’s door over the instrument panel support and across to the front passenger door. The central display has also been integrated seamlessly into the upper part of the instrument panel.

2013 Bentley Continental GTC V8 Preview

Plz click Like button to thank the Author:

Bentley introduces the topless version of its Continental GT V8 in the Continental GTC V8, to join its line-up of cars to be launched this year.

The Continental GTC sports the same powerful V8 engine like its hard-top sibling which has been tuned to be a lot more frugal the previous generation.

New Design

The Continental GTC is identical to its hard-top sibling, barring its light-weight convertible roof. Both the V8 models feature the ‘B’ emblem with red wings. Glossy black front grille differentiates the V8 models from the W-12 ones. The V8 GTC carries the same muscular elegance of the W-12 models with characteristic wide rear track, powerful haunches and aggressive low stance.

Performance

The Bentley Continental GTC comes with a 4.0 litre V8 engine which churns out 500hp and 487 pound-feet of torque. The car does 0-60mph run in less than 5 seconds. The performance is almost equivalent to the Continental GT W-12 model. Not only is the car powerful, the engineers have managed to bump up the efficiency of the engine by 40% as compared to the old W-12.

To achieve this level of efficiency, the engine is designed to switch-off values of 4 out of 8 cylinders when the driver is maintaining a steady cruising speed. The engine switches back to V8 mode from V4 when the throttle is pressed harder. An intelligent Engine management system (EMS) works behind the scene to manage incredibly high level of precision in control of combustion process.

Transmission

The new 8 speed automatic transmission also contributes to the efficiency gain of the V8. Greater number of ratios makes sure that the engine is always at its most efficient shifting.

The Bentley Continental GTC V8 carries on the positives of the previous generation models, but with a much more efficient engine and vehicle dynamics. This open-top beauty is not just a great looker, but beneath the skin it’s a highly efficient vehicle as well.

The highly esteemed luxury sports car marque Aston Martin has always had a certain 'je nais se quoi' and über cool status, thanks to being immortalised on television and big screen films like James Bond and the company's racing heritage. The Aston racing heritage stems right back to the beginning of the 20th century when the company used to compete in hill climb races; later in the century saw many of the big names race with the Aston Martin team, which together with the film exposure has made the company into a desirable brand worldwide.

New V12 Zagato

The new Aston Martin V12 Zagato, which makes its debut at the Kuwait Concours d'Elegance in the Middle East in February 2012, has been designed to mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary iconic '1961 DB4 GT Zagato'.

The 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato in its day raised the bar and set a benchmark for the hand crafted design of luxury sports cars around the world. There Is No Better Buy Than a Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan, South Africa, Group 1

Plz click Like button to thank the Author:

Every few years a vehicle is released that has critics sitting at the edge of their seats. This was very much the case when the Nissan Qashqai was first launched in South Africa back in 2007. It's hard to believe that it's been around for nearly 5 years already as this crossover SUV hasn't seemed to age much and still boasts fresh face appeal. Whether buying a new or used Nissan Qashqai, it's money well spent. And with demand not subsiding you can furthermore be assured that it will retain its value, more so than many of its competitors.

The new Nissan Qashqai retails from a surprisingly low R229 990 at local dealerships while the range leaves buyers spoiled for choice with 1.6L and 2.0L petrol as well as 1.5L and 2.0L diesel engine options. Its aerodynamic design is responsible for competitive fuel consumption figures and CO2 emissions, allowing you to save on your fuel costs while doing your bit for the environment. A new Qashqai buy also includes a 3 year/90 000km service plan which translates into even more savings, while a used Qashqai remains an excellent choice if you're lucky enough to find one.

Classified as a crossover the Qashqai doesn't match the proportions of an SUV, yet it is significantly bigger than a hatch with loads of space to prove it. The interior is designed to wrap around the driver without compromising movement while all occupants have more than enough head and legroom to enjoy drive comfort on longer road trips. A recent addition to the Nissan Qashqai family was the Qashqai+2 model. This 7-seater was created by slightly extending the wheelbase to accommodate a third row of seats. Should you require load space, the seats can be folded down together or separately to suit your needs. For those who also want to explore the outdoors, the 4x4 addition to the Qashqai range offers off-road capability without the expected hefty fuel tag.

Nissan took no shortcuts on the Qashqai's safety measures. As a result and in recognition of top occupant protection, it received the maximum Five Star Euro NCAP rating. Furthermore all models are packed with a full house of comfort and convenience features such as a state-of-the-art audio system, electric windows and air conditioning to name a few. And besides a choice of colours and trims, Nissan Qashqai owners also have the option to accessorise their vehicles with various add-ons ranging from leather seats and roof bars to stainless steel side bars and bonnet guards. Not that the Qashqai needs anything more of course.

2013 Rimac Concept One

Plz click Like button to thank the Author:

A maximum output of over 1000 horsepower, an acceleration of 3 seconds or less, and a top speed of almost 200 miles an hour, have all been attained by an electric powered car. Yes, seriously. Breaking the mold of supercars and shattering the stereotype of an electric car as a boring and unreliable enterprise, the 2013 Rimac Concept One breaks out of the closet as perhaps the first true supercar that is purely powered by electricity.

Exterior & Interior

The super dynamic body, created by designer Adriano Mudri, is both super elegant and super aerodynamic. Even better is that this body is sculpted out of carbon fiber, creating an audaciously lightweight car that has legitimate supercar dynamics. The interior is designed by people that are formerly associated with the famed designer Pininfarina, and is adorned with high quality materials such as leather-wrapped seats and an infotainment system.

Performance

A unique powertrain is integrated for the Concept One. Featuring 4 different subsystems, with each having its own engine, inverter, and reduction gearbox, they have a cumulative maximum power output of 1088 horsepower. This gives this car some stunning performance numbers: a zero to 100 kilometers per hour dash of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of more than 300 kilometers per hour just to name a few. In addition, with batteries that carry a maximum charge of 92kWh, it is enough to carry this car to a distance of up to 600 kilometers before needing a recharge.

The Rimac Concept One is one unique car. Only 88 of these cars are going to be produced, and each car has the lofty reputation of being perhaps the first ever electric powered hypercar.
