What is the fastest car in the world? A question that is often asked among auto enthusiasts. We have scoured this internet in our quest to find the fastest cars in the world. Keep in mind, at the time of this publishing there are a few cars that are rumored to be attempting to grab the top spot. They are not production cars yet, therefore they did not make it into our top 10 list of the fastest car in the world. We will be periodically updating this list so check back often! 1. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport; 267 mph, 0-60 in 2.2 seconds – Currently owns the title for The Fastest Car in the World. At the heart of this super lightweight super car, is a 8.0-liter W16 engine that cranks out 1200 horsepower. This exotic beauty is produced by Volkswagen Group subsidiary Bugatti Automobiles and was introduced in 2005. This machine was built solely for the intent of claiming the title as the fastest production car in the world! Among this top 10 list of fastest cars in the world, the Bugatti Veyron SS is also the most expensive car coming in at $2,400,000.

2. SSC Ultimate Aero; 257 mph, 0-60 in 2.7 seconds – Up untilMarch 2007, this car was known as the fastest car in the world. That title was later claimed by the Bugatti Veyron SS, but that doesn’t mean this car is a sleeper! Powered by a twin-turbo engine that pumps out an insane 1183 horsepower! Aside from being the title holder of the second fastest car in the world, the SSC Ultimate Aero is also one of the rarest in the world. Between 2006 and 2007, only 24 cars were manufactured and each sold $485,000.

3. Koenigsegg CCX; 250 mph+, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – AKA The Swede Koeni. This beast got its nickname because of the sheer power it puts out and because of its country of origin. It dominates the race tracks and settles in 3rd place of this list due to its 806 horsepower that is produced from its 90 degree V8 engine block. Introduced on February 28, 2006 at the Geneva Motor Show, the CCX came with a price tag of $1,820,000 for the base model and $2,050,000 for the all-options top model. With the Swede Koeni CCX only a few has been produced, assuring exclusivity.

4. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo; 248 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – At the heart of this mean pavement eating, tire destroying vehicle is an all aluminum V8 engine that packs a jaw dropping 750 horsepower. This twin turbo’d beast was released to the public in 2005 at a price point of $585,295. The twin turbo replaced the standard non turbo S7 production. If this model isn’t enough to wet your panties, Saleen offers an optional package that increases power by over 30%. Only people with balls of steels need apply.

5. McLaren F1; 240 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – You will find nothing short of a monster V12 pushing over 620 horsepower in the heart of this iconic super car. Made popular by its trademark doors that resemble the wings of a bat, the McLaren F1 is not only extremely fast, it is extremely menacing to look at. The McLaren F1 is one of the few cars whose value increases over time. At the time of production stop, the standard F1s were being sold for $970,000, but these days the McLaren can be found for a whopping price tag of around $2,000,000. A fitting pricetag for an iconic car.



6. Gumpert Apollo; 220 mph, 0-60 in 2.7 seconds – The goold ol’ Gumpert Apollo. A car that is less known among the general public. This car has its roots in Germany, being produced by an automaker in Altenburg. Like most of the other super exotic cars, this car is a mid-engined, RWD two seater, fiberglass body mounted upon a tubular chrome chassis. For those that don’t like fiberglass, there was also an option to get the panels done in carbon fiber. Unlike other super fast cars, this car had 3 engine types to choose from. The fastest option was a “race ready” engine that packed an astounding 789 horses. Even for this little known car, this car carries a hefty price tag of $400,000.

7. Ascari A10; 220 mph, 0-60 in 2.8 seconds – Considered and built for racing, this Ascari A10 can also be used on the streets. What makes this car unique is it is hand built in Banbury, Englant and contains a 5.0 L BMW V8 that is heavily modified to produce a staggering 635 horsepower. Even if you have enough money to afford the $650,000 price tag, chances are you will not be able to get your hands on one. Only 50 were ever made and most of them are in private collections.

8. Ferrari Enzo; 217 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – One of the most recognized super car brands in the world. This prancing pony is super-powered by a F140 V12 powerplant that kicks up 660 horsepower. Even now, many years after its production, the Ferrari Enzo is still one of the strongest naturally aspirated production car in the world. The Enzo is one of Ferrari’s most iconic and flagship cars it has ever built. If you ever get the chance to see one in the streets, make sure you take plenty of pictures because only 399 of these were ever produced. The Enzo was sold around the $1,000,000 mark but every year the price rises due to decreasing numbers. The reason is a lot of these cars are lost in accidents.

9. Jaguar XJ 220; 217 mph, 0-60 in 4.0 seconds – Shocking! A Jaguar made it into the top 10?! Yes people, this is one fast cat. The shocking fact is this car only contains a V6 engine that cranks out 542 horsepower. Don’t let its engine size fool you. Among this top 10 list, the Jaguar Xj 220 is one of the oldest. Produced in 1992, this Jaguar was sold for around $270,000 new. Few of these remain.

10. Pagani Zonda F; 215 mph, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds – The Pagaini Zonda…one of the most sought after cars in the world. This car earned its spot in the top 10 fastest cars in the world list. Beating out the Lamborghini Murcielago, the Pagani cranks out 650 horsepower by a Mercedes V12. This car is available for an average price of nearly $700,000.

Euro BMW E36 M3 Evo Vanos Noise

A frequent complaint from our M3 customers is the infamous "vanos grumble" from the front end of the engine, particularly when the engine revs fall past around 1200rpm. Often misunderstood, & frequently leading to very expensive repairs, we thought we would share our insight into these units, how they work & how we fix them!

The vanos system is designed to improve the power & torque available at different engine loads across the rev range. It does this by advancing or retarding the camshaft timing on both the inlet & exhaust camshafts independently.

How It Works

This adjustment is achieved through high-pressure engine oil acting upon pistons within the vanos unit that in turn extend or retract the vanos gear shaft. The high pressure is derived from a pump within the vanos unit, driven from the exhaust camshaft, & boosts internal oil pressure within the vanos unit to around 1500 PSI.

The vanos gear shafts have a helical cut gear section that locates into a similarly helical cut gear in the camshaft sprocket, & a straight splined section that locates in the camshaft. As the gear shaft is forced forward, the straight cut spline slides longitudinally into the camshaft & has no effect on cam-timing. However, the helical-cut gear section cannot move forward [or backwards] without rotating the camshaft sprocket - this rotating action alters the relationship between the camshaft sprocket & the camshaft lobes & hence alters the camshaft timing.

The movement of the vanos gear shafts is monitored by signals from the camshaft sensor signals & relayed to the ECU where it is compared with the expected position from the ECU map, & then adjusted accordingly by switching the required solenoid until the required position is achieved. Switching the solenoids diverts oil pressure within the vanos body from one side of the vanos piston to extend it, to the other to retract it.

The Noise

For any gear mechanism to work, there has to be a small clearance or the gears would bind & seize. As the teeth on the vanos gear shaft & the internal cam sprocket wear over time, this clearance increases.

Now think about the valve spring forces acting on the camshaft lobes. As the camshaft rotates, the force applied to it from the valve spring will increase up to the point the maximum valve lift occurs (valve fully depressed). At this point all the wear/clearances in the various mechanisms will be loaded in one direction.

As the camshaft passes over maximum lift, the maximum valve spring force is then applied to the other side of the cam-lobe & any wear in the gears/sprockets will suddenly be loaded in the other direction (basically transferring load from one side of the gear tooth to the other). This transfer of load from one side to the other will near instantly take up any clearance between the gears. This sudden load transfer from maximum one side through the clearance to maximum the other causes a knocking sound & is the source of the characteristic vanos grumble. This is then magnified by each valve (24 in this engine) & is exacerbated by the fact that the camshafts on the euro E36 M3 are hollow-drilled, & so act like drums magnifying any noise.

The Cure

Until recently the standard approach was to renew the vanos unit. This was very expensive & depending on the degree of wear, in many cases proved to be a relatively short-lived solution. The reason for this is similar to fitting a new bicycle chain to worn cogs - the new chain wears rapidly to the profile of the old cogs, & vice-versa, so fitting new vanos gear shafts to worn camshaft sprockets has the effect of wearing the new gears to the profile of the old sprocket teeth which in turn leads to excessive clearance & you are back at square-one! The only real way to affect a lasting solution is to renew the vanos unit & both camshaft sprockets, which further increases the cost to beyond what many of these cars are now worth!

Iridium Engineering has tackled this issue two-fold.

First, we have developed a kit to replace the standard nitrile (NBR) hydraulic solenoid seals with a much more resilient Viton version, which helps maintain the internal oil pressure to activate the vanos pistons. The standard seals are not particularly well suited to the temperatures & chemical attack from oil engine oil & tend to harden & lose their sealing effectiveness over time. Our kit also includes uprated high-tensile bolts to replace the standard solenoid cover bolts which have been known to fail.

Second, we have found a workshop solution that involves refitting the original vanos unit in a slightly different gear-to-gear orientation that, in the vast majority of cases, eliminates or significantly reduces the noise. As you are reusing your existing vanos unit that has already had the gear teeth work-hardened through use, this solution appears to be longer lasting than fitting an expensive new unit.

Special tools & diagnostics equipment will be needed to ensure correct cam-timing & operation is achieved, but many good BMW independent garages should be able to undertake this work in around 6 hours.

Maintaining Your High Mileage BMW

In this current economy, we see more car owners maintaining their current vehicle. The cost of maintaining your BMW can be quite expensive. While on many of the BMW enthusiast forums, I have read several posts about car owners trying to get the best deal on wheel alignment and other repairs. You can often see community responses touting low-cost deals. Forums are a great place to report repair deals and independent shop experiences. They are monitored very closely to ensure that members are not soliciting or selling repair services, but actually reporting their experiences and recommendations.

Keeping up on your routine service will save you time and money down the road. High mileage vehicles need to be serviced in an expert environment that uses the best parts and technology that is specific to your car brand manufacturer. Do not take short-cuts on receiving routine service. Verify that your independent shop employs dealer trained automotive technicians. Make sure they are providing the same or better materials than going to your brand dealership.

A good shop will make sure they take special care in doing oil changes. They will have several quality check points including keeping it lubed and making sure the filter's clean. Your older car engines need all the help they can get. Change the oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles. Make sure your tires and brakes are inspected for wear with your routine service appointment.

If your vehicle has a timing belt, it is recommended to have it replaced at the 60,000 miles (or slightly more) interval. When a timing belt becomes stretched it reduces engine performance. If you do not catch this repair at an appropriate time in your mileage and it breaks, your car will not run and it may also result in engine damage.

BMW owners seeking to get a wheel alignment should ask the repair shop to describe to you how they perform this service. Compare the methods used at various shops before deciding where to purchase their service from. You will be able to compare which shop has the best services. It is not only about the best price. A wheel alignment involves several adjustments. The cheaper the service, the likelihood they only barely provided a service. If tires are worn, uneven, or not in worn balance, your car can pull or shake when you drive. Left unattended, it can potentially damage other components.

Make sure the shop you choose is performing your wheel alignment according to the recommendations of your car brand. For example, in providing a proper wheel alignment for a BMW, it requires expertise in BMW Kinematic Diagnosis. This involves having an understanding of maintaining the standards of speed, precision, performance, and handling. This also involves knowing the proper camber and caster measurements, along with the toe. The toe is essential because it is the angle of the wheel in relation to your BMW to improve steering ability. Make sure to keep your tires properly inflated. It is recommended rotate and balance them every other oil change. Make a habit while stopping for gas to take a moment to check for uneven wear.

Aston Martin Launches the DBS Carbon Edition, aston martin dbs carbon edition, dbs carbon edition?

The prestigious luxury sports car company Aston Martin has just unveiled the new "Aston Martin DBS Carbon Edition" at this year's Frankfurt motor show, which is due to be available for delivery during early in 2012.


This is a special version of the Aston Martin DBS and it is the follow-up to the "DBS Carbon Black" which was introduced in 2009 and is available as either "coupé" or the "Volante" model. This car can be distinguished visually on first glance from a standard DBS with its black carbon fiber fascia grille which appears to have weave that has been positioned exactly to follow the form of the dashboard, this is said to be only achieved when the carbon fiber is laid by hand.

The carbon fiber theme is extended to the "Touchtronic II" automatic gearbox paddles. Just in case you forget you are in a Carbon Edition Aston Martin, there is a unique carbon fiber special edition sill plaque which has a laser-etched metal inlay.

In addition to all of the visual aspects to the DBS Carbon Edition the car features a Carbon Black Paint as standard, with two new colors, "Flame Orange" and "Ceramic Grey" on offer. Every car will receive the unique Aston Martin's paint process, which consists of seven layers of paint together with a 25 hour hand "flat-and-polish finish". Another feature but also a first for Aston Martin is the optional "satin lacquer" paint finish, this is apparently desired as it achieves an "über smooth" finish.

Still on the exterior, the Aston Martin DBS Carbon Edition will be fitted with 10-spoke gloss black diamond-turned wheels which can also feature a reversed diamond turned or full gloss black finish as an option. The brake calipers are black as standard, with yellow, orange, red or grey as optional colors and other carbon visual enhancements. The engine is the meaty lump that is currently fitted to the DBS, the V12, which produces 510 bhp.

The interior has the usual quality leather finished trim that you would expect in an Aston Martin, which buyers can choose from either obsidian black or "Maranello" orange. The coupé model also receives a quilted leather headlining finish. To give you an idea of attention to detail, the Carbon Editions' interior will take over seventy man hours to hand stitch and finish. The Carbon Edition and the standard DBS both now receive the vastly improved Aston Martin Garmin satellite navigation system and for added safety they will be fitted with the new 'beam blade' windscreen wipers that have been designed to reduce wind noise and provide a cleaner wipe at high speeds.

2011 Ford Mustang Vs 2010 Chevrolet Camaro: A Mom's Review

One of the challenges of being the sole female in a houseful of males is being able to relate to my sons and husband collectively when it comes to favorite hobbies and pastimes. While I enjoy fishing, camping and now even golfing with my husband and kids, I have a hard time sitting still for some of the other things that the males in the household enjoy; take Bear Grylls devouring a rotting sheep on Man Vs. Wild, for example. There is one thing in our family that seems to bring all of us together, however; weekend drives in our Mustang.

My husband drives cars the way that old men drive them. Although I'm a woman and the usual stereotypes should apply, they don't. During one last solo trip to visit my mother in MN, after I had driven our 5 year-old Pontiac Grand Prix as though it were in a Grand Prix, it came home dripping steering fluid and had transmission issues. Like a horse that's been ridden hard and put up wet, the workhorse engine in it was almost dead. Simply put, I'm hard on a car.

My husband, unhappy that another car was being forced into early retirement because of my double life as a race car driver, decided to look into several options for our next vehicle. Ideally, he was looking for a larger American model with great reviews, good gas mileage, and a sturdy engine that could handle abuse yet had overall curb appeal. A great sound system option was a plus too, after all, we're not dead yet. The new, redesigned version of the Ford Taurus was one of the cars that we were impressed with because it met all of our criteria.

Then we got sidetracked.

Remembering how our whole family enjoyed drives in the 2011 Ford Mustang convertible rental that we had for a few months last fall, we decided to consider a sportier car in lieu of a sedan. Needless to say, our 6 and 9-year old sons were all in, delighted at the prospect of owning their very own 'Lightening McQueen'.

My husband, not unlike many family men ripe for the picking by automobile industry marketers, had long been enticed by the new breed of sports coupes available and more specifically, he liked the refreshed pony cars. The pony car models of today are geared toward the middle-aged family man who has other, more practical vehicles in his fleet, but longs for the days of his youth when muscle cars were king. Marketing companies are quite savvy when it comes to knowing who has a little expendable income lying around these days, and they realize that for the most part, it isn't anyone under the age of 30.

Enter my man at stage left.

Frothing at the possibility of trading our 4-door Grand Prix workhorse for a shiny new bauble soon became almost more than my husband could bear. Knowing that we already owned the obligatory kid-hauling minivan and that he was eventually going to invest in a sturdy 4x4 for winter, the idea of buying a sports coupe started to seem all the more reasonable. While there are many, probably more "true" sports cars out there, he lusted after the 5th generation Chevrolet Camaro and had loved driving the Mustang last fall.

Countering Lee's interest in the Camaros, and reminding him that it was my driving that had served as the original impetus for our search, I implored him to consider a Mustang. I loved the classic feel of the 2011 rental last fall and reveled in how much power there was under the hood. A battle ensued.

To humor me, my husband agreed to research both cars. Having already driven a Mustang, I humored him by agreeing to test drive one of the 2010 Camaros. While overall Lee liked it, especially the slick new body-styling and overall approach to the engine redesign, I was less excited about it. While the Camaro is undeniably a sharp looking vehicle to some, I just didn't care for the overall design of the vehicle, both inside and out. The interior felt too cheap and confining and the overworked and contrived body style outside had too much of a caricature muscle feel for my taste; it reminded me too much of Lightening McQueen.

There were other issues as well. The Camaro's windshield visibility was abysmal as far as I was concerned-it was like trying to look out of a mailbox slot or tank window-not what I envisioned for Sunday drives with the kids. After all, our intent was that all four of us would be riding in this vehicle-the whole point behind getting a sports coupe was to have something that would feel like a vacation for all of us, even when we weren't on one, and the Camaro simply didn't cut it.

Camaros have always been known for having blind spots and poor driver visibility, but the visibility in the 5th generation model was nothing short of ridiculous. The pillars all around were too thick and the rear-view mirror seemed huge in proportion to the windshield. The front seats felt low and claustrophobic and the windshield was so tiny that when looking out of it, the massive hood scoop took up most of the view. While it's an impressive view, it seems like it's the only view, and ended up being a detail that I just couldn't get past. In the back seats, the boys could barely see out of the side windows. It's true that a Camaro convertible would have had a different feel, but the practicality of driving one with the top down all of the time simply wasn't realistic.

While I appreciated that the Camaro was designed for true pony car enthusiasts, it wasn't the least bit practical for a family of four. I know that statement is hilarious-after all, what sports coupe is really designed with a family in mind? But for us, we needed to keep that at the forefront of why we were getting it-we intended it as a fun, sporty get-away-from-it-all vehicle that all of us could enjoy, kids included.

The 2011 Mustang, by comparison, had a cleaner looking outer-body design that was classic and strong in feel, but not overdone. It had a similar hood scoop that the Camaro maintained, but visibility in the Mustang was better because the seats are set up higher in the vehicle. The back-seat windows were larger and the boys were able to see out of them easily. The retro feel of the interior was well-done and tasteful.

Like my husband, I went online to research the two models and was impressed when I came across a video by Consumer Reports. I also looked up other reviews and repeatedly, the Mustang seemed to be the preferred choice. Many of the reviews cited the fact that Ford has had over 30 years to perfect the design, and it shows.

By comparison, Chevrolet stopped making the Camaro in 2002 and finally resumed production in 2010. Besides all of the refinement issues, the Mustang is 300 pounds lighter than the Camaro and has better handling, giving it an edge when it comes to speed and maneuverability. The powerful V-6 is excellent on gas mileage at 24/30 MPG considering that the engine boasts 305 HP (which is almost as powerful as previous models of the V8).

In short, I felt that the Mustang was the better choice and was relentless about passing that opinion on to my husband. This was, after all, a battle.

After having a difficult time finding a Mustang in a package that we both could agree on, Lee finally found one after a month of searching. On the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend we went to check it out, Lee warning me that if we didn't opt for this one he was resorting to a Camaro.

Thankfully, it had everything we wanted: V-6 engine, convertible, heavy-duty Shaker stereo system, and leather seats-in a shade of red that practically rips your eyeballs out of your head. In other words, what we looked at was a 2011, V-6 California Premium Package, Mustang Club of America car minus the black stripes (which we didn't care for anyway), a combination that's difficult to find in Wisconsin in the color that we wanted. Mmmmmm.

After I reminded my husband that it was Mother's Day weekend and that against the 2010 Camaro, the 2011 Mustang was the car to beat, my husband resigned himself to the Mustang, his heart still panging for the Camaro. With around 10K miles, the soon-to-be-ours Mustang had been the car of a Ford exec in Michigan. With our trade-in, the final price was a steal at 23K, tax, title and license included. Had we bought it brand new, the price would have been around 35K.

"You're lucky it's Mother's Day" he quipped, vowing that as the Camaro continues to be refined over the next few years, it will be his turn come one Father's Day.

We'll see.

After all, Ford will have had that much longer to perfect the Mustang too, and I have a pretty good feeling that they will; they sure did a good job on this one.

For the 2012 model year, Porsche has unveiled a new generation of 911. Called the 991, the new 911 is faster, longer, sleeker, and more powerful than the previous 997-generation models with new 3.4 liter and 3.8 liter engines. Before it has even hit dealership lots and gone on sale, TechArt, the German tuner, has developed a new preliminary upgrade program for the iconic sports car. The kit consists of new Porsche rims, revised aerodynamics, engine upgrades, and interior refinements.

Porsche has introduced two new variants of the 911; the Carrera and Carrera S. The base 911 Carrera is powered by a 3.4 liter horizontally opposed engine that produces 350 horsepower while getting 34 mpg. The 911 Carrera S on the other hand, sends 400 horsepower to each of the rear Porsche rims and achieves a respectable 32 mpg. TechArt plans on upgrading each of the engines by introducing an exhaust system made from stainless steel to reduce backpressure, and new air filters. A software optimization program is also planned to improve power output. The new upgrades will help decrease acceleration times and top speed figures when coupled with revised aerodynamics and forged concave wheels.

To help put the added power to the asphalt and add a touch of style, TechArt is developing new chassis and forged concave wheels for the new 991-generation. The stock Porsche rims will be replaced with lighter and stronger forged concave wheels that create a muscular stance and reduce unsprung mass for improved performance. The suspension will be lowered by new springs and coilovers, leading to sharper handling and a reduced center of gravity.

The exterior will also be upgraded in order to improve aerodynamic efficiency and generate greater amounts of downforce. The aerodynamic kit will include revisions to the front bumper consisting of carbon fiber or painted spoilers, enlarged air intakes, and LED lighting. Side skirts between the front and rear fenders will help to channel air away from the wheels. The rear upgrades will include a modified bumper, diffuser, and spoiler to create improved downforce for added stability at high speeds.

The package will be completed with interior refinement upgrades. Trims along the dashboard, center console, and doors will be available in carbon fiber, wood, or different colors. Three-spoke steering wheels with paddle shifters for 911s equipped with PDK transmissions will be available. All of the seats can be fitted with high quality leather and custom stitching designs in any color.

TechArt's new upgrades for the 991-generation Porsche 911 will be available at the beginning of 2012. Pricing for the upgrades, wheels, engine power kits, and interior refinements have not been released.

On more than one occasion, a novice has happily bought his first car, and later discovered that the car of his dreams was actually riddled with rust. You simply apply this product to the affected surfaces and it works by chemically removing the oxygen from the oxidation.

There are a multitude of applications for a used coil springs suspension system. The majority of front-wheel-drive vehicles are built with coil springs which are assembled to the strut basically coiling around it. Larger and much heavier duty automobiles place the coils between the chassis and the frame and feature shocks as a completely separate suspension element.

In another popular segment of the aftermarket parts market are coil over shocks. Similar to a strut, the coil wraps around the entire shock but it doesn't usually bolt to the steering knuckle like a strut does. You need to change shocks and struts much more frequently than a regular set of used coil springs, but make sure to thoroughly check the used springs when you decide to replace any suspension components.

Even a good set of used coil springs may become compromised after long periods of time therefore you need to pay attention to the longevity of the springs. Moreover, depending on how they are used on the vehicle, many coil springs can actually last as long as the vehicle can. The reality is that there is not really any sort of expiry date on springs. There are only a few things that you need to pay attention to when inspecting your car or truck's suspension system.

Even though it is the springs that support the entire weight of a car, it is the shocks or struts that hinder the bouncing after encountering rough or uneven terrain. You can test this by simply bouncing the front or the rear end's suspension of your car and count how many bounces take place after you release the car. A total of 2 or more full bounces may mean that you may have very weak shocks or struts. This is when you need to determine the cause of this. The overall age of these parts is likely the determining factor. Coil springs are definitely much more durable than a set of shocks or struts. In many instances simply replacing the shocks or struts will return the vehicle back to its original level of performance.

On the other hand, weak shocks or struts will wear down coil springs if left unattended for an extended period of time. As the coils begin to become weak, you will start to notice thumping sounds or bottoming out more often especially when going over speed bumps. The reason for this is that the coils aren't able to administer stability to the weight of the car anymore.

Furthermore, weakened coils can cause irreparable damage to your car's shocks or struts since their rebound distance will be much higher than the components were designed to handle. Weak coils will ruin the ride height of the automobile and if left unattended may jeopardize the alignment as well. Measuring the ride height of the vehicle and comparing that with the specifications will aid you in figuring out whether the used coils are working properly together with the shocks and struts.

There are some cars that have an extended and well known history of breaking coil springs so these are one to look out for. It can be an extremely hazardous situation depending on the position of the break in the coil spring. Since springs are positioned very close to the tires, it's not rare for a broken spring to rub against the sidewall of a tire and inadvertently puncture it causing a flat tire or even worse a blowout of the tire.

Upon examining a set of used coil springs or used lowering springs, run your hands all the way around the coils from the front all the way to the back. You will notice that some coil springs make us of a protective cover that can conceal the break. However, if you attempt to run your hands around the symmetrical coil you will feel a slight abnormality.

Furthermore, another thing to listen to and look for is a squeaking sound or binding of the strut bearing plate on strut applications. Attempt this by turning the steering wheel back and forth and listening for binding or squeaking sounds. Damaged bearing plates will cause the coil springs to react in ways they were not designed to do and over the course of time wear them out.

An important thing to pay attention to is when you should consider replacing your current coil springs with a set of good quality second hand used springs. You definitely should not replace them each time you replace your shocks or struts. To start off with, inspect the coil springs every time you change any suspension parts. Idler arms, ball joints, pitman arms, tie rod ends and control arms that are damaged in any way can all cause damage on the spring and shock or strut.

Take a moment to measure the ride height of your car, van, truck or SUV, and then compare it with the manufacturer specifications. As the coil spring supports the weight of the vehicle, one that is performing significantly below its' determine specifications may likely have been compromised springs. Additionally, examine in contrast the ride height side to side on the same axle. The coil springs are separate elements and it is plausible that one side can become weak while nothing is wrong with the other side. Even though this may cause one side of the car to sag lower make sure you replace both just in case. A key point is to always change your shocks, struts, coil or leaf springs in complete sets as opposed to individually.

You may well wonder whether you should you always change shocks or struts when replacing your springs with a set of good used springs. Although many people will debate the necessity of it, unless you know how long your existing set of coil springs has been compromised, you need to be aware of the fact that that the shock or strut has taken up the slack of the spring. If you looking for a more comfortable and better performing ride from your vehicle then you definitely need to consider replacing the shocks or struts every time you change to a set of high quality used coil springs. If you are looking to save a buck or two then this option may not be for you. However, you need to realize that you may not be saving money in the long run. Remember, you need to remove coil over shocks and struts and compress them when attempting to remove the coil springs from their assemblies. Therefore, if you choose to cut costs in these situations you may be stuck with additional expensive labour costs or wasted time in attempting only to change to a set of used lowering springs without replacing your shocks or struts.
