Ferrari Spells Opulence Grace and Most of All SPEED!

Long a symbol of style as well as grace and having "made it" in life Ferrari cars are still made with racing and success in mind. When founder Enzo Ferrari first began making cars in 1929 in Maranello Italy he had Formula One racing in mind instead of the more common street legal machines we can see on the highways and roadways around the world today. Not that there is anything "common" about a Ferrari! But in order to boost sales and attract more buyers the road car began to appear in 1947, opening up a whole new market for classy automobiles that many could afford. That road car, the 125 S had a powerful 1.5 litre V-12 engine and it could hold its own against anything else that was "street legal" at the time.

From 2002 until 2004 the fastest model of Ferrari available was the Enzo. Named after the founder of Ferrari, the Enzo was definitely aimed toward the wealthiest of auto enthusiasts because of its high cost (nearly two million dollars). Availability was somewhat limited as well because they were special ordered only and difficult to get. Always a pace setting automobile, the Ferrari continues to dominate on the Le Mans and Formula One race courses as well as impressing many on the streets around cities around the globe.

Concept cars and hybrids bring Ferrari into the future

As the world must decide between fast cars and gas consumption versus practicality and gasoline economy Ferrari has been working on producing more practical vehicles including those which operate efficiently on some form of bio-fuel or ethanol. The 599 Fiorano model, which normally has 612 horsepower gets a boost of more than 100 more horsed thanks to the Ferrari hybrid system. They even gave it a new name, HY-KERS Concept car. And concept cars are nothing new for Ferrari as they have had many over the years including the Ferrari Modulo (a radical model never meant to see production lines). Some concept based cars like the Ferrari P4/5 were made to order for wealthy owners who could afford to pay for specially built "toys". Most recently the Ferrari Millechili came about in 2010, made by Ferrari itself and boasting an aluminium frame resulting in a much lighter vehicle with racing in mind.

Ferrari continues to think and play well ahead into the future.

Audi A3 produced in 2003 is the perfect example of Audi A3 tuning history. Until recently, this compact car was the youngest model in the series of Audi cars. By the quality factor of building materials and construction, despite its modest dimensions this car is as good as its older versions. But this car is much cheaper in the operation and maintenance.

The car was produced as a 3 and 5-door hatchback and also as a cabriolet. Its sale started seven years ago. The hot version of S3 was in the model range of this car.

Engine line of Audi A3 consisted of gasoline engines for 4 series with a capacity of 1.6-liter from 102 to 115 hp of output and the engines with a capacity of 2.0-liter ranging from 150 to 200 hp in output. The engines were with Turbo inflation and also with 3.2-liter 250 hp powered V6. There were also 1.9 liter turbo diesels with 105 hp. and 2.0 liter ones with 150 hp of output. The weakest gasoline engine in the standard was combined with a 5-step mechanics but the other versions were equipped with 6-speed manual gearshifts.

Except for the 105-strong diesel versions, a 6-speed automatic transmission is offered for sale. The powerful petrol and turbo diesel versions were in a kit with DSG transmission with two clutches. In a base, all modifications are of a front- wheel drive and a 3.2-liter version was originally equipped with a four-wheel drive transmission of Quattro. By the quality of materials and construction Audi A3 is practically no different from its older models in the series. However the car has everything in place with its equipment kit. For example, the standard version of Attraction was equipped with ABS system with brake force distribution EBD, a steering wheel electric power enhancer, front airbags, electric windows, heated mirrors and with a system of dynamic stabilization. That's all. However, on the second hand market, there are almost no cars without air conditioning and audio player.

There are quite a few models that are equipped with alloy wheels and automatic transmission. There are options with leather interior and xenon headlights. The cars offered by dealers are equipped with reinforced chassis, crankcase protection, and increased ground clearance.

Audi A3 can be quite simple in design as well as tightly stuffed with electronic systems and the ultra modern mechanisms. For example, with the base 1.6-liter engine it is easy to repair the car and the car is more secure. This engine willingly uses 92-nd gas. But unlike most other 8-valve engines timing belt breakage leads to sad consequences. There are not many 6-cylinder versions of the Audi A3 on the market. Engine functioning statistics for this engine is also in a scarcity. Nevertheless, the repairmen on car repair services do not complain for its functioning.

Turbo diesels are reliable in general, but there is a threat to invest in the failed unit injectors.

On the mechanical 5 - and 6-speed gearboxes the bearings used to fail. Trouble makes itself heard by the howling under the hood. If you bring the car in repair service on time the repair cost will not be expensive but during neglected cases the repair is expensive and sometimes it is necessary to change the MCP.

If Audi A3 with automatics is trembling during the motion, in most cases, this suggests to a faulty block valves. The replace is rather expensive. There were the cases when it was required to update the converter. It is an important part of automatic transmission but generally the A3 chassis is quite strong. The fastest amortizing elements are the front brake pads that can have a one-sided amortization, when only one of the couple is wiped out. Some experts predict as high as $5.00 a gallon. One expert, Tom Kloza, chief analyst of the Oil Price Information Service, disagrees. Kloza believes that $3.75 is more like it. However, there are gas saving tips that you can do to be able to save some money and maximize your use of gasoline. Even so, at these prices you're likely to see more advertising for "gas-saving" devices. Sure, everyone wants to improve their gas mileage, but do these "gas-saving" products really hold up to their claims?

In the case of gas-saving devices, the adage of "buyer beware" rings true. Be suspicious of any outrageous claims made by companies or individuals hawking gas-saving devices or fuel additives. And while it's true that some of these products have been found to work, the effect on gasoline savings has been minimal. In fact, the EPA has tested over one hundred of these products that claim significant gas-savings, yet none have been found to live up to their claims. In fact, some of these products have been found to damage your engine. Last I heard, an engine overhaul isn't a very effective gas-saving method. Best advice? Be skeptical of any boastful claims made by anyone promoting a gas-saving device or additive.

Rather than put your faith and hard-earned cash into products boasting exaggerated claims, try these simple tips for saving money at the gas pump.

Buy your gas first thing in the morning or late at night. Gas is denser at a cooler temperature. You will be getting more for your money when you stock up your gas in the morning or late at night than stocking up during the day.

Compare gas prices within your community and look for the one that offers the best value for your money. Here's a hint - you can check gas prices online. This way you will not need to drive out just to compare prices in your area. This will surely help you save some gas, too, right?

Keep your car well-maintained. Cars in top condition do not consume too much fuel. Tune your car regularly so that your fuel consumption will be reduced by 20 percent. Always check the condition of the tires, too. Make sure they are inflated and aligned properly. Under inflated tires will increase your fuel consumption by 6 percent. Another important parts of your car that need to be monitored are your oil and air filters. They need to be changed regularly in order to keep your car running smoothly. The overall health of your car greatly influences your gas consumption.

When driving, always stay within the speed limits. If you are driving too slowly, you will consume a lot more gas. If possible, you should sometimes use overdrive. This will help save fuel as well as improve the wear on your car engine. When you go out, make a list of all your errands so that you will be able to get all of them done in one go. Remember that you consume too much fuel if you keep on cold starting your car engine.

Avoid unnecessary hard braking and rapid acceleration: In other words, drive sensibly. Sudden stops and starts and other forms of aggressive driving behavior decreases fuel mileage by as much as 33% at highway speeds and as much as 10% in city driving.

Avoid idling: Idling consumes up to one-quarter of a gallon an hour depending on engine size, air conditioning and other factors. Turn off your engine while parked.

Remove excess weight from your trunk: Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your trunk, every 100 lbs of excess weight equals a 2% loss in fuel economy.

On the Road: Drive More Efficiently
- Stay within posted speed limits. Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 miles per hour.
Stop aggressive driving. You can improve your gas mileage up to five percent around town if you avoid “jackrabbit” starts and stops by anticipating traffic conditions and driving gently.
- Avoid unnecessary idling. It wastes fuel, costs you money, and pollutes the air. Turn off the engine if you anticipate a wait.
- Combine errands. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.
- Use overdrive gears and cruise control when appropriate. They improve the fuel economy of your car when you’re driving on a highway.
- Remove excess weight from the trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk can reduce a typical car’s fuel economy by up to two percent.
- Avoid packing items on top of your car. A loaded roof rack or carrier creates wind resistance and can decrease fuel economy by five percent.

At the Garage: Maintain Your Car
- Keep your engine tuned. Tuning your engine according to your owner’s manual can increase gas mileage by an average of four percent. Increases vary depending on a car’s condition.
- Keep your tires properly inflated and aligned. It can increase gas mileage up to three percent.
- Change your oil. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), you can improve your gas mileage by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. Motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the performance symbol of the American Petroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fuel economy.
- Check and replace air filters regularly. Replacing clogged filters can increase gas mileage up to ten percent.

At the Pump: Use the Octane Level You Need
- Your owner’s manual recommends the most effective octane level for your car. For most cars, the recommended gasoline is regular octane. In most cases, using a higher octane gas than the manufacturer recommends offers no benefit. Unless your engine is knocking, buying higher octane gasoline is a waste of money.

In Advertising: Check Out Claims About “Gas-Saving” Gadgets
- Be skeptical of claims for devices that will “boost your mileage by an extra 6 miles per gallon,” “improve your fuel economy up to 26 percent,” or the like. EPA has tested over 100 supposed gas-saving devices — including mixture “enhancers” and fuel line magnets — and found that very few provide any fuel economy benefits. The devices that work provide only marginal improvements. Some “gas-saving” devices may damage a car’s engine or increase exhaust emissions.

In the Showroom: Consider the Alternatives
- Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs) operate on alternative fuels, such as methanol, ethanol, compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, electricity, and others designated by the DOE. Using these alternative fuels in vehicles may reduce harmful pollutants and exhaust emissions. FTC Rules require labels on all new AFVs to give the vehicle’s estimated cruising range and general descriptive information. Find out how many miles a new AFV travels on a tank or supply of fuel because, gallon for gallon, some don’t travel as far as gasoline-powered vehicles.

- Hybrid Electric Vehicles offer another option for car buyers. According to DOE and EPA, these vehicles combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to achieve different objectives, such as improved fuel economy and increased power.

Using some gas-saving products may end up costing you more money than you save. If you pay $10 for such a product and only save one gallon of gas as a result, you obviously didn't save any money. Follow these gas-saving tips and your fuel savings will add up substantially over time.

Honda established another benchmark in fuel saving technologies by re-inventing the internal combustion engine design and implementing the Variable Cylinder Management technology to deliver the most outstanding power without actually affecting the fuel economy. Combined with the brilliant i-VTEC Engine, this technology can save fuel considerably while reducing the CO2 emissions and particularly most useful during long distance traveling.

This technology works according to the driving habits and conditions. VCM automatically deactivates 1 out of 3 or 1 out of 2 cylinders in case of 6 cylinder engine. The technology closes the valves in two or three cylinders as per the need and stops the fuel supply so that these cylinders do not involve in combustion process. Technically, this makes the engine smaller, producing required output and reducing the CO2 emissions. The technology operates based on seven different driving conditions and in three stages. Normally for city cruising, when the power requirements are not much, combustion from three cylinders out of six is enough to fulfil the required speed. Even while braking, the effect remains the same keeping three of the cylinders inactive.

However, as soon as the driver presses the accelerator for better speed requirements, VCM allows all the cylinders to operate normally providing ample power. Generally on a highway, acceleration is required only for an instance to overcome the friction. Later on the vehicle requires only a power to maintain the cruising speed which the VCM knows very well and as such it deactivates three cylinders instantly. The third stage of VCM comes into action when the cruising speed needs a little more acceleration in case of overtaking which activates one more cylinder making total of four out of six cylinders active and satisfies the driver's acceleration needs. Right after the acceleration is achieved, the engine runs back on three cylinders again. By switching between the cylinders, power is made available just when there is a need while keeping a close eye on fuel consumption.

An engine with VCM Technology also helps in eliminating pumping losses in the engine cylinders by preventing the formation of air resistance during the pumping of intake and exhaust gases from the cylinder. As claimed by Honda, this technology also reduces loss generated due to friction from valve cams and springs. But Honda needed expert engineering skills to implement this technology. The rocker shafts were needed to have hydraulic pathways to allow the pin to slide and stop the valves from operating and thereby deactivating the required cylinders. The VCM technology was first featured on 3.0L V6 engine with two stages of switching between three and six cylinders but later on developed on a 3.5L V6 with three stages combined with VTEC technology.

Saving a fuel always had to compromise with power before this technology evolved but Honda's VCM certainly proved that impossible is nothing!

Speed Demons and City Cars

The fast production car in the world
Back in 1992, Gordon Murray and McLaren Automotive made the fast production car in the world. The McLaren F1 was, and still is the fastest normally aspirated production car in the world.
I remember it like it was just yesterday. I was in London in March of 1998 and the news channels were buzzing with the story - The McLaren F1 became the fastest production car with a top speed of 240 miles per hour. That was straight from the factory with no mods.
Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to see a few of these cars in person. The picture here is one that Turner Motorsports brought every year. There was also another one that came to Lime Rock that had raced in the 24 Hours at Le Mans. That was a serious privilege. Not many people get to see a car with that kind of history.
One day at the track, I saw a lucky reporter get a ride in the McLaren. It was every car lover’s dream. If you’re not familiar with the McLaren, the driver seat is actually in the middle. There are two seats that are set back on either side of the driver’s seat. The three seats sort of look like a triangle. That reported climbed in, got buckled, and probably got the ride of his life. I was very envious that day.
I wanted to write this story because Gordon Murray has just released his T25 concept “city car“. It is smaller than a Smart ForTwo and has the same seating setup as the McLaren F1. It is a 51hp car that is said to get 61.9 miles per gallon. That is impressive! One of his main purposes for designing this car was to cut down on congestion and being able to park 2 T25s in a single parking space.
Their new MP4-12C looks like it has a Ferrari front end and roofline, paired with a Lamborghini lower half and vents on the side. Not an original design if you ask me. But with 600hp, I bet it’s a blast to drive.

What is the fastest car in the world? A question that is often asked among auto enthusiasts. We have scoured this internet in our quest to find the fastest cars in the world. Keep in mind, at the time of this publishing there are a few cars that are rumored to be attempting to grab the top spot. They are not production cars yet, therefore they did not make it into our top 10 list of the fastest car in the world. We will be periodically updating this list so check back often! 1. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport; 267 mph, 0-60 in 2.2 seconds – Currently owns the title for The Fastest Car in the World. At the heart of this super lightweight super car, is a 8.0-liter W16 engine that cranks out 1200 horsepower. This exotic beauty is produced by Volkswagen Group subsidiary Bugatti Automobiles and was introduced in 2005. This machine was built solely for the intent of claiming the title as the fastest production car in the world! Among this top 10 list of fastest cars in the world, the Bugatti Veyron SS is also the most expensive car coming in at $2,400,000.

2. SSC Ultimate Aero; 257 mph, 0-60 in 2.7 seconds – Up untilMarch 2007, this car was known as the fastest car in the world. That title was later claimed by the Bugatti Veyron SS, but that doesn’t mean this car is a sleeper! Powered by a twin-turbo engine that pumps out an insane 1183 horsepower! Aside from being the title holder of the second fastest car in the world, the SSC Ultimate Aero is also one of the rarest in the world. Between 2006 and 2007, only 24 cars were manufactured and each sold $485,000.

3. Koenigsegg CCX; 250 mph+, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – AKA The Swede Koeni. This beast got its nickname because of the sheer power it puts out and because of its country of origin. It dominates the race tracks and settles in 3rd place of this list due to its 806 horsepower that is produced from its 90 degree V8 engine block. Introduced on February 28, 2006 at the Geneva Motor Show, the CCX came with a price tag of $1,820,000 for the base model and $2,050,000 for the all-options top model. With the Swede Koeni CCX only a few has been produced, assuring exclusivity.

4. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo; 248 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – At the heart of this mean pavement eating, tire destroying vehicle is an all aluminum V8 engine that packs a jaw dropping 750 horsepower. This twin turbo’d beast was released to the public in 2005 at a price point of $585,295. The twin turbo replaced the standard non turbo S7 production. If this model isn’t enough to wet your panties, Saleen offers an optional package that increases power by over 30%. Only people with balls of steels need apply.

5. McLaren F1; 240 mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds – You will find nothing short of a monster V12 pushing over 620 horsepower in the heart of this iconic super car. Made popular by its trademark doors that resemble the wings of a bat, the McLaren F1 is not only extremely fast, it is extremely menacing to look at. The McLaren F1 is one of the few cars whose value increases over time. At the time of production stop, the standard F1s were being sold for $970,000, but these days the McLaren can be found for a whopping price tag of around $2,000,000. A fitting pricetag for an iconic car.



6. Gumpert Apollo; 220 mph, 0-60 in 2.7 seconds – The goold ol’ Gumpert Apollo. A car that is less known among the general public. This car has its roots in Germany, being produced by an automaker in Altenburg. Like most of the other super exotic cars, this car is a mid-engined, RWD two seater, fiberglass body mounted upon a tubular chrome chassis. For those that don’t like fiberglass, there was also an option to get the panels done in carbon fiber. Unlike other super fast cars, this car had 3 engine types to choose from. The fastest option was a “race ready” engine that packed an astounding 789 horses. Even for this little known car, this car carries a hefty price tag of $400,000.

Even now, many years after its production, the Ferrari Enzo is still one of the strongest naturally aspirated production car in the world. The Enzo is one of Ferrari’s most iconic and flagship cars it has ever built. If you ever get the chance to see one in the streets, make sure you take plenty of pictures because only 399 of these were ever produced. The Enzo was sold around the $1,000,000 mark but every year the price rises due to decreasing numbers. The reason is a lot of these cars are lost in accidents.

9. Jaguar XJ 220; 217 mph, 0-60 in 4.0 seconds – Shocking! A Jaguar made it into the top 10?! Yes people, this is one fast cat. The shocking fact is this car only contains a V6 engine that cranks out 542 horsepower. Don’t let its engine size fool you. Among this top 10 list, the Jaguar Xj 220 is one of the oldest. Produced in 1992, this Jaguar was sold for around $270,000 new. Few of these remain.

Euro BMW E36 M3 Evo Vanos Noise

A frequent complaint from our M3 customers is the infamous "vanos grumble" from the front end of the engine, particularly when the engine revs fall past around 1200rpm. Often misunderstood, & frequently leading to very expensive repairs, we thought we would share our insight into these units, how they work & how we fix them!

The vanos system is designed to improve the power & torque available at different engine loads across the rev range. It does this by advancing or retarding the camshaft timing on both the inlet & exhaust camshafts independently.

How It Works

This adjustment is achieved through high-pressure engine oil acting upon pistons within the vanos unit that in turn extend or retract the vanos gear shaft. The high pressure is derived from a pump within the vanos unit, driven from the exhaust camshaft, & boosts internal oil pressure within the vanos unit to around 1500 PSI.

The vanos gear shafts have a helical cut gear section that locates into a similarly helical cut gear in the camshaft sprocket, & a straight splined section that locates in the camshaft. As the gear shaft is forced forward, the straight cut spline slides longitudinally into the camshaft & has no effect on cam-timing. However, the helical-cut gear section cannot move forward [or backwards] without rotating the camshaft sprocket - this rotating action alters the relationship between the camshaft sprocket & the camshaft lobes & hence alters the camshaft timing.

The movement of the vanos gear shafts is monitored by signals from the camshaft sensor signals & relayed to the ECU where it is compared with the expected position from the ECU map, & then adjusted accordingly by switching the required solenoid until the required position is achieved. Switching the solenoids diverts oil pressure within the vanos body from one side of the vanos piston to extend it, to the other to retract it.

The Noise

For any gear mechanism to work, there has to be a small clearance or the gears would bind & seize. As the teeth on the vanos gear shaft & the internal cam sprocket wear over time, this clearance increases.

Now think about the valve spring forces acting on the camshaft lobes. As the camshaft rotates, the force applied to it from the valve spring will increase up to the point the maximum valve lift occurs (valve fully depressed). At this point all the wear/clearances in the various mechanisms will be loaded in one direction.

As the camshaft passes over maximum lift, the maximum valve spring force is then applied to the other side of the cam-lobe & any wear in the gears/sprockets will suddenly be loaded in the other direction (basically transferring load from one side of the gear tooth to the other). This transfer of load from one side to the other will near instantly take up any clearance between the gears. This sudden load transfer from maximum one side through the clearance to maximum the other causes a knocking sound & is the source of the characteristic vanos grumble. This is then magnified by each valve (24 in this engine) & is exacerbated by the fact that the camshafts on the euro E36 M3 are hollow-drilled, & so act like drums magnifying any noise.

The Cure

Until recently the standard approach was to renew the vanos unit. This was very expensive & depending on the degree of wear, in many cases proved to be a relatively short-lived solution. The reason for this is similar to fitting a new bicycle chain to worn cogs - the new chain wears rapidly to the profile of the old cogs, & vice-versa, so fitting new vanos gear shafts to worn camshaft sprockets has the effect of wearing the new gears to the profile of the old sprocket teeth which in turn leads to excessive clearance & you are back at square-one! The only real way to affect a lasting solution is to renew the vanos unit & both camshaft sprockets, which further increases the cost to beyond what many of these cars are now worth!

Iridium Engineering has tackled this issue two-fold.

First, we have developed a kit to replace the standard nitrile (NBR) hydraulic solenoid seals with a much more resilient Viton version, which helps maintain the internal oil pressure to activate the vanos pistons. The standard seals are not particularly well suited to the temperatures & chemical attack from oil engine oil & tend to harden & lose their sealing effectiveness over time. Our kit also includes uprated high-tensile bolts to replace the standard solenoid cover bolts which have been known to fail.

Second, we have found a workshop solution that involves refitting the original vanos unit in a slightly different gear-to-gear orientation that, in the vast majority of cases, eliminates or significantly reduces the noise. As you are reusing your existing vanos unit that has already had the gear teeth work-hardened through use, this solution appears to be longer lasting than fitting an expensive new unit.

Special tools & diagnostics equipment will be needed to ensure correct cam-timing & operation is achieved, but many good BMW independent garages should be able to undertake this work in around 6 hours.
