In all combustion engines, a radiator plays the major role of a heat exchanger. The coolant after absorbing heat from the hot engine block passes this auto part, wherein it is cooled down with the help of an electrical or belt-driven fan, the coolant after cooling down returns back to the engine. In this way, the radiator serves a heat exchanging system for the coolant. Structure wise, a car radiator consists of several folds and chambers for increased surface area to aid in effective cooling of the system.

Do car radiator leaks just happen? According to the National Automotive Radiator Repair Association (NARRA), they do. NARRA studies suggest that leaks have more to do with age than mileage. This is the reason changing your vehicle's coolant annually is such a good idea.

Although many external factors can cause a leak, such as impact, road salts, and chemical reactions, the most common breakdown happens inside the core itself. When your car's anti-freeze gets old or overly diluted with water it cannot do its job lubricating and inhibiting corrosion. This problem is easy to recognize when the coolant fluid becomes discolored.

There are multiple warning signs indicating that your vehicle has a leak. The two most obvious signs are puddles of coolant under your car or truck, or an ongoing low fluid level condition. You'll recognize the puddle under your car as radiator fluid by the bright, neon green color. Another sign that might not be as obvious is an unusual odor inside the car. It will be an annoyingly sweet smell.

Once you realize that your vehicle has a leak, the next step is to determine the location. The most common failure points are the radiator tanks, cooling and heating system hoses, petcock (drain valve), and the thermostat. If the smell inside your vehicle is exceptionally strong it is also possible that you have a heater core issue.

The best way to find a drip in the cooling system is to start your car, lift your hood and inspect with a flashlight. Be careful to stay clear of moving parts. Check the bottom hoses first, as this is very common.

If the issue is a hose you're in luck. This is a very easy repair. Your local auto parts store will typically have the hose and new clamps for less than $25. You'll also need a gallon of anti-freeze to refill the system after you replace the hose.

If the leak is in your radiator, you might be able to apply a "cold weld" temporary fix using an epoxy cement. The most popular product on the market for this is J-B WELD. It's a two part epoxy that's been around for decades. It offers a safe and reliable repair in engine compartments up to 500° F. It's super strong and impervious to water, petroleum chemicals and acids. WARNING: It does not work on plastic (such as the plastic coolant tanks that are now common on most cars), but it works great on aluminum core or copper core cooling fins. Best of all, it only takes 2-3 hours to fully cure.

If you use a temporary "cold weld" repair on your cooling system, you should also consider using a low pressure cap. A cap with an overflow release less than 10 lbs per square inch is ideal. If you don't do this, and the engine gets overly warm, you risk blowing out your repair.

Although a quick fix might seem like the solution, ideally you should replace the faulty component with a new or quality aftermarket part. Your cooling system works hard and the last thing you want is to be stranded, when you least expect it, far from home. In most cases, you can replace a radiator, hoses, clamps and coolant yourself, at home, for less than $250.

Avoid cost repairs to your car's cooling system by maintaining the coolant annually and checking your hoses regularly. It's smart maintenance that will save you time and money.

How to Fix a Car Radiator Leak?

Having a basic knowledge about the location and function of a radiator will help you in fixing a car radiator leak within no time. For temporary fixing, many people prefer using ground black pepper and duct tape to repair the leakage. Nevertheless, you can also find a car radiator leak sealant, which is specifically meant for fixing radiator leakage. Depending upon the model of your car and whether the radiator is made up of copper or aluminum, you will find different radiator sealants. Read more on car parts.

The first thing to do for a car radiator leak repair is to detect the leak spot. Check for hole and/or puddle deposits in the radiator. An easy approach is to wash the hose and the radiator with water and then look for leakage signs. In case, you cannot locate the radiator leak this way, consider removing the radiator to check for leaks. You can dip the radiator in a tub filled with water and see if there are any air bubbles escaping from the radiator.

The next step after locating the radiator leak is to patch up the leak. In case of leakage in the hose pipe, use duct tape to fix the problem. If the leak is in the radiator itself, then use the car radiator leak sealant, as per the directions provided in the kit. For using pepper, open the radiator cap and pour 1-2 teaspoons of ground pepper powder. Pepper powder is a good sealant, which automatically lodges into the leaks. And after coming in contact with water, pepper swells up, thus fixing the leaks properly.

Once you have used the sealant or pepper powder, add coolant up to the correct level. Then close the cap of the radiator and check again for radiator leaks. If there is any, proceed with the above mentioned steps again until there are no signs of radiator leaks. So, you have successfully repaired radiator leaks. But, it is to be borne in mind that this is a temporary solution and you need to contact a professional mechanic as soon as possible.

Hydrogen On Demand, Fossil Fuel Is Getting Depleted!

The depletion of crude oil reserves worldwide has led scientific researchers onto other available sources of energy. Because of more research being done, it has brought hydrogen on demand as one of the next sources of fuel.

Hydrogen is the lightest element known to man. It is an explosive gas that does not exist freely in air, but as a compound in several substances that are both organic and inorganic. The most common substances that have this element as one of the elements forming them, are water, fats, carbohydrates and several other substances like petroleum. Since it is not available as a free gas, hydrogen generators are used to extract it from the compounds.

Water Electrolysis

One of the common most ways to obtain the gas is by cracking petroleum fuels. This is not helpful, as petroleum is the same source of energy that is facing depletion. This has therefore forced inventions of other ways to obtain the gas. The most successful method is water electrolysis.

Water electrolysis is the method through which electricity is passed through water separating the two components of water, hydrogen and oxygen, into gases. Each formed at each of the anodes.

Another source of generation of this fuel gas is the fuel cell. In fuel cells, water is split into the two components which are then reacted together giving enormous amounts of energy. The amount of energy required to hydrolyze water is very small compared with energy given out by the exothermic reaction between the two constituent gases.

The Cost

Use of hydrogen fuel is very cheap compared to other sources of energy, especially the limited fossil oil and natural gas. The main costs involved in the production, is the cost of buying the generator. Buying a generator large enough to supply a home comfortably requires a lot of money. However, this is cheap in the long run as one spends lesser on energy bills. One should ensure that they buy the latest model of generators as these are more efficient and has advanced safety devices.

The next cost in generating your own hydrogen fuel is the cost of electricity to run the generator. This is however not much as compared to the amount of energy it avails you. Some fuel generators, especially the ones on vehicles are self sufficient, in that the hydrogen used, is used on demand. The electricity needed to run the generator is produced by the cars alternator.

Hydrogen use is very economical as its use does not require set up of complex factories, like refineries and oil wells that are usually set up whenever oil is found. It is also free from political influences that affect the pricing and availability of oil. Political influence on energy source can deeply hurt an economy and its independence. The use of this energy enables families to save greatly on gas bills. The money saved can be directed to other sectors of the economy.

Explosive & Dangerous

The main problem that affects this source of energy is its explosive nature. This makes its transportation and storage very dangerous. Large amounts of stored gas can explode and engulf a very large area there-by hazarding both human life and the environment. This gas is usually stored in leak proof cylinders with very thick walls to withstand the pressure inside. The cylinders are then stored either underground or in an area where it can be tempered with the least.

To avoid electrical charges from accumulated to high levels within the storage cylinder, they are always grounded. The second way of dealing with the charge build up is providing the tank with spark arrestors so the charges will escape into the air.

To avoid problem with fires, it is a common trend to use a hydrogen generator where the hydrogen is used on demand. This eliminated the need for large storage tanks, or the need to transport the gas over long distances either by road or by rail. This is what makes it very dangerous if an accident does occur.

Another problem with hydrogen gas as fuel is that it requires large space for storage. Liquid gas will need about four times the space needed by fossil fuels that can produce the same amount of energy. This means that fuel tanks have to be redesigned to at least four times larger when moving to this type of fuel. This problem is mainly solved by using a portable generator that will supply you with the gas as it is being produced.

E-mobility requires new partnerships

For electric cars, different agreements on power supply and charging stations could be combined, to lead to full-service solutions in which all relevant areas are covered by a lease rate. To tie all these packages together, car traders will need e-mobility partnerships with power companies, company management specialists or fleet operators.

Emerging car sharing concepts such as 'Car 2 Go', offered by Daimler, or BMW and Sixt, who offer 'Drive Now', are formulas that are especially made for electric cars. Because these zero-emission vehicles are mainly suited for short trips, a car-sharing model is perfect!

According to Oliver Wyman, already 76 of these partnerships were announced in Europe, 43 in the Asia-Pacific region, and 30 in the U.S. The main reasons for high figures in Europe is the pressure to reduce emissions, the high rate of innovation in e-mobility and the high awareness of the positive effect on brand image .

How to find the best e-mobility partnerships?

Since the state is generally important for the development of e-mobility infrastructure, governments are currently the most common partners. However, the entire sector is still in its development phase, as are the partnerships.

Because the e-mobility is so new, it is still not clear which sales, leasing or rental solutions are best for who, and which partners are most suitable. Long-term relationships haven't been built yet. At the moment traders are using a trial and error method to find partners. It will probably take a few years and the introduction of more electric vehicles on the market, before it will be known which solutions meet customer needs most effectively.

Every year automakers use auto shows around the world to showcase solid production models, innovations, and concept cars. The concept cars usually receive more news than everything else at these shows combined, and they should. After all, concepts showcase technological breakthroughs and design cues that will ultimately trickle down to the production vehicles of the brands that build them. In that spirit, here are a few of the top concepts coming out of the Frankfurt Motor Show this year.

The big concept from Jaguar this year is an Austin Powers (James Bond if you don't know who he is) type of car that actually includes a power boost button. Jaguar has been reinvigorating its sedans with the help of chief designer Ian Callum. His latest proposal is the C-X16, a sleek, compact, two-seat sports car with a lightweight body, six-cylinder engine and a hybrid system that uses a boost button to vault the car around slowpokes on the highway. Where are the oil slick and machine gun mounts?

The Mercedes F125 is a big sedan with a sports car stance. That is always a bonus, but according to experts, its fuel-cell/plug-in hybrid power system could be prohibitively expensive, so this one will mostly likely stay a concept.

The Land Rover DC 100 is a redesign of the African safari sized Defender. The Defender has been essentially untouched since 1990 and Land Rover is using this concept and others to find out if there is a need for the redesign in the eyes of the public.

A couple of days ago, one of the foremost manufacturers of off-road vehicles, U.K based Land Rover had given a sneak peek into an all new Land Rover DC100 Concept. Now, at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show (IAA 2011), Land Rover has finally unveiled the actual vehicle that by all standards is a fascinating 4WD vehicle that has been introduced in two models, the Land Rover DC100 and the ravishing Land Rover DC100 Sport. Both these models that will most possibly take the form of new Land Rover Defender trucks by the year 2015, have been designed and developed on the principle of form-follows-function, where in the SUVs’ shapes have been conjured up on the basis of their functions. Both the SUVs carry a very impressive style statement that is accentuated with the use of cutting edge engineering under the hood as well as with the presence of some of the most futuristic systems such as terrain mapping and depth analyzers.

The all new Land Rover DC100 features a rather simplistic design and reminds us of the old canvas topped Defender trucks and both the new trucks will also offer the customers with Ultrafabrics, which has been designed and developed to provide antimicrobial, water-repellant, solar aging resistant breathable material that has been mostly seen in the realm of luxury furniture and luxury yachts. This state of the art fabric has been applied to the truck’s door panels, and seat bolsters, while the seat cushions feature Superfabric that is applied to space suits and act as protective clothing. The DC100 is powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine ensure enhanced off-road performance, while carrying an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission as well as start/stop system for the engine. Both diesel and the gasoline engines have been given the capability to be used as plug-in hybrid systems. Furthermore, the DC100 has been integrated with a cutting edge electronic torque vectoring system, wherein the vehicle delivers the required power to the wheels, regardless of the terrain.

Furthermore, the DC100 Sport features a remarkable new system called, ‘Terrain-i’.This incredible system enables the vehicle to create a 3D map of the upcoming terrain. Land Rover has packed the DC100 Sport with numerous great features, such as retractable tire spikes even a park-assist system when the vehicle is in urban environment.

Volvo Concept You is a big sedan with wooden floors, suit fabric on the seats, and a sound system that uses fresh air from outside the car to power the subwoofers. With a few practical refinements, this could be Volvo's answer to its dwindling marketshare.

The 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show (IAA 2011) is all about the future of automobiles as the entire event has been flooded with some of the most remarkable concept vehicles envisioned for the future. Now, one of the foremost names in luxury automobiles Volvo, has come out with its very own concept vehicle called, 2011 Volvo Concept You, a magnificent coupé-like vehicle that boasts of futuristic luxury and cutting edge engineering. The Concept You has been designed and developed on the basis of a wide range of public feedback that was gathered as part of Volvo Concept Universe program that was unveiled at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year. The Concept You is amalgamation of contemporary Scandinavian design with state of the art technology both under the hood as well as in the interiors too. The 2011 Volvo Concept You has is said to be a vision of what the company’s next luxury sedan will be like, as it will be replacing the current Volvo S80.

The most astounding element of the Concept You is its interiors that are will make any tech enthusiast drool all over himself. At the center of the dashboard is a touchscreen tablet style console and is fully integrated with the heads up display on the windscreen as well as with the digital instrument panel. The tablet style interface takes care of all the car’s functions, thereby removing all button and keys from the dashboard. The central screen is embedded with a pair of infrared cameras that continuously track the driver’s eye movements. The screen lies in sleep mode and the moment driver looks at it, the screen activates instantly. The display itself shows the car’s climate settings, acts as the infotainment system and even provides full Internet access.

Audi Urban Concept lets you jump right in, literally. There are no doors, you get in through the roof area. The Urban Concept only weighs 1,058 pounds and is purely electric. It could be a create short range commuter and is a lot hotter looking than a Smart Fortwo.

On the eve of the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, during a media presentation, Audi unveiled its Urban Sportback and Spyder concept cars in the flesh.

Until now, the German car maker had only released sketches and computer generated images of its 1+1 seater studies.

Comparing the two models, a huge difference can be spotted especially when talking about the windshield of the car and the retracting side-door windows of the original car. Considering that the convertible shows a low, continuous window area and its doors that open diagonally to the top, we can say that is an airier alternative to the tiny hard-top Audi Urban Concept.

While the exterior looks dynamic and emotional, the interior has been designed to accommodate two people, again with everything from controls to materials obeying the principles of light-weight construction. The two seats are slightly staggered, while the driver can adjust the steering wheel and the pedals. A sliding canopy that forms part of the body opens up to allow the driver and one passenger to enter the car. The cockpit consists of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, which integrates the undercarriage of both seats. The Audi urban concept rolls on wheels with a 21-inch diameter and is powered by two e-tron electric motors that draw energy from a lithium-ion battery.

The Audi Urban Concepts weight 480 kilograms (1,058.22 lb) thanks to the lightweight chassis design and the numerous CFRP components, and measure 3,219 millimeters (126.73 in) in length, 1,678 millimeters (66.06 in) width, and just 1,189 millimeters (46.81 in) height.

This concept is powered by two electric motors mounted between the rear wheels, producing a total of 20 horsepower (15 kW and 47 Nm of torque) which are being fed by a lithium ion battery weighting around 90 Kg (198.42 lb) that produces 7.1 kWh.

The car maker claims that this battery will regain its energy in around 20 minutes if plugged in a 400 Volt three-phase outlet, or in around 1 hour at a regular 230 Volt current.

As for performance, the Audi Urban Concepts sprint from nought to 60 kmph (37 mph) in 6 seconds (0 to 100 kmph / 62 mph in 16.9 seconds) and can hit a top speed of 100 kmph (62.14 mph)/ electronically limited.

Each of these could be fun cars to drive, but only two (personal opinion) will probably make it all the way to production: the Jaguar and the Land Rover. The Mercedes would probably be too expensive even for high-end buyers, the Volvo is probably not conservative enough to appeal to the company's standard demographic, and the lack of doors could prove unnerving for Audi buyers. Of course, concept cars are rarely built to go into real production. Rather, they are exercises in design and engineering, allowing designers to stretch the limits of their creativity without the burden of practical implications.
