A Brief Introduction To The Brake Lathe

Plz click Like button to thank the Author:

A brake lathe is basically a lathe that is made from metal and which has especially been designed to help turn an automatic brake drum and motor and several other items. In the traditional metal lathe, the piece that is to be worked on will be suspended horizontally between a spindle that rotates and a tailstock.

The brake lathe is different as it only has a single spindle and the item that has to be worked on will be suspended in a vertical position. However, both machines will make use of cutting bits that are mounted on different tool posts and these cutting bits will then cut into a metal stock that is rotating.

The brake lathe operates by making use of an arbor that is inserted into a central hole within a brake rotor. There is also an arbor mounted rotor that is placed on the shaft of a spindle and it is secured with the help of a locking ring. By maneuvering the tool post and also the bit with the help of hand cranks or by mechanical means it is easy to fix the rotor and remove any dirt and rust as well as debris.

Most companies realize that when it comes to replacing a drum or rotor and any other section that forms part of the braking system that the costs involved can be very high. In order to lower these costs it makes sense to use a brake lathe which will help to resurface all of these items and in doing so will make them more effective once more.

The bench type is used when you need to remove a drum and rotor from a vehicle so that these can be repaired. Such machines are normally found in either commercial or private settings. These units also give you several options to choose from including between single and variable and even high speed styles.

The on car unit is another variant and is a good addition to the bench type as it can help you to perform the necessary repairs directly on a vehicle. This kind of unit will not wreck the hub or even the wheel of the vehicle and so is a good option.

The only trouble with using these kinds of units is that they need to first be set up perfectly. Only if the set up is perfect you can expect to see high quality repair work done. However, both these kinds of units can easily repair a rotor and a drum to such an extent that after the work has been done the rotor or drum will be in as good if not better shape than what they were when originally manufactured.
