Prolong The Life Of Any Vehicle With Regular Oil Changes

Motor oil is crucial to the performance of an engine. This slippery liquid lubricates the many moving parts working together to propel an automobile down the road safely. Lubrication forms a thin film between parts and helps them work more efficiently. If the fluids are drained from the system, the parts create friction as they rub against one another. The whole system slows down and parts start wearing out faster than they should.

Lubrication also plays an important role in cooling the motor. The circulating fluids disperse the heat produced by the normal combustion process. Friction between parts creates even more heat and if left to build up will eventually damage the engine.

A car engine lacking proper lubrication is susceptible to corrosion. Oxidation will cause the metal parts to rust and eventually corrode. Any metal particles that break off the engine parts will cause further damage as they circulate through the engine. These small pieces can block the filters and the engine will have to work harder. All of these problems lead to more wear and tear and shortens the lifespan of the various parts and pieces making up the engine.

Changing the fluids in an automobile on a regular basis will reduce the friction generated by moving parts and aid mobility. This not only helps the parts work more efficiently but also allows the driver to get better fuel mileage and save money at the gas station.

As oil circulates through the engine, it is constantly cleaning the surfaces it touches. The fluid picks up dirt particles and various contaminants that are normal byproducts of combustion. These various substances are suspended in the fluid. Eventually the fluid becomes saturated and the particles settle and form deposits. When the fluid becomes too thick to circulate properly, it is time to replace it.

Experts advise car owners to follow the manufacturer instructions regarding the maximum number of miles recommended before maintenance is required. Sometimes adjustments to the recommended schedule are required to account for location. Cars maintained in certain regions of the country require special attention due to climate considerations. Drivers should consult the vehicle manual and speak with a professional mechanic to create an effective maintenance program.

Car owners should check the oil level in the car every few hundred miles. If the dipstick shows the level to be at or below the minimum requirement, the owner can add a quart of oil to the crankcase. Cars may need some additional fluid from time to time but if it becomes constant, there may be a leak or some other bigger problem requiring the attention of a trained mechanic.

People who have experience with basic auto repair can easily do this type of maintenance in the garage at home. Those who are less mechanically inclined will find a number of local auto repair shops. Some specialize in this type of service. An oil change is affordable, especially when compared to most other vehicle repair bills. Many businesses offer customers a package that includes additional service like inspecting all fluid levels and topping off those that are low.

In addition to replacing the fluid, a trained mechanic will remove the old filter, install a new filter and discard the old liquid. The filter is a barrier of protection to keep dirt and debris from circulating through the valvetrain, crankshaft and other portions of the engine. A clogged filter will impede the free flow of fluid throughout the system.

Proper disposal of car liquids is necessary for the health of the environment. No one should ever flush these fluids down the toilet. Dumping them down the nearest sewer drain is just as harmful because the toxic substances can leach into the soil.

Staying on top of routine maintenance and scheduling regular oil changes are effective ways to prolong the life of any motor vehicle. Most car owners spend less money in repairs over the life of the automobile when they follow the recommendations set forth by the manufacturer.
