Even though you have more chances to spot a prototype model of a future Porsche model doing the rounds at the Nürburgring racetrack than anywhere else, the Germans try out their cars in many countries around the world, including of course, the U.S.
Fastcarinworld.Com reader Alex Ranarivelo snapped this lightly camouflaged 2013 Porsche Boxster with Michigan license plates rolling around in Los Angeles.

Understandably, he was only able to take a quick picture of the two-seater roadster model from behind – though judging from Porsche's past and previous spy shots, don't expect any revolutionary changes to the Boxster's design.

But while the styling of the Mk3 Boxster may not raise any eyebrows, the possibility of a new four-cylinder engine will surely come as a surprise.

Official details remain slim, but there's an increasing number of reports suggesting that Porsche is currently developing a horizontally opposed four-cylinder unit with turbocharging and direct injection technologies that will be available with a displacement of 2.0-liters or less.

If it turns out to be true, the same engine will also be offered on the replacement of the Cayman coupe.

We’ve seen it running at the Nürburgring; now we’ve caught the 2013 Porsche Boxster Prototype testing stateside. Spotted in heavy LA traffic, these two disguised Boxsters show subtle but significant differences from the current car. More shapely and aggressive bodywork at the rear is apparent, along with a new taillight design. Also notable, the decklid has gone from two pieces (with a panel each for the convertible top and the trunk) to a clean, single piece of sheet metal. We’ll look forward to seeing how the new design integrates with the convertible top. The front of the car shows some 911 influence, with bigger vents and shorter overhangs, but I had a tough time getting a shot of the nose from my moving motorcycle…might have had something to do with my thick gloves! If this new 2013 Porsche Boxster does not make a surprise debut at the Frankfurt show in September, perhaps we’ll see it on the stand at Geneva early next year.
